After a five-year hiatus, the “greatest show on earth” made a spectacular comeback. Embracing cutting-edge technology, the show aimed to create a deeper connection between the Ringling audience and its performers. Central to this vision is a sophisticated media synchronization system called Timecode, which seamlessly coordinates pyrotechnics, music, lighting, and video. Despite its automation capabilities, the system allows for manual overrides, ensuring that the dynamic, unpredictable nature of live entertainment remains at the heart of the reimagined production.
While Ringling no longer features its iconic three-ring setup, it now boasts over 200 feet of trussing and rigging that supports its advanced technological spectacle. A standout component of this innovation is BlackTrax. Tour manager, Rob Lange described the software as “almost like GPS for lighting.” Performers wear two or three small infrared sensors, and a network of 36 cameras mounted in the overhead grid tracks their every move. This real-time data feeds directly into the moving lights, directing them to follow the performers’ positions with incredible precision, just like traditional spotlight operators once did.
Complementing BlackTrax is Ringling’s long-time production software, Disguise. Together, these technologies are programmed and operated by a team of skilled technicians, ensuring each show delivers a seamless blend of artistry and innovation.
